The Shaw High School Chess Club meets every Thursday right after school in the SHS Media Center. Whether you know absolutely nothing about the game of chess or you are a whiz, you are invited to come join us! We start playing as soon as at least two players arrive and finish up about 4:30 p.m. Due to the Chattahoochee Valley Scholastic Chess League’s director’s health, there will be no “official” chess league competitions this school year. However, we will invite other area high schools to come to informal chess competitions here at Shaw. Russell County High School has already come. As we did last year, we will have a Shaw High Chess Club mini-tournament later in the school year. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners. Last year’s winners received gift certificates and movie passes as prizes. The Shaw Chess Club was formed for three basic purposes: (1) socialize with other students who either play chess or want to learn to play chess; (2) to enter competitions with other high schools in the area and/or the state; (3) and to increase academic performance. Recent studies conducted in schools around the world have found that there is a correlation between playing chess and a student’s academic performance. These studies have found that with students who play chess, the students’ self-confidence increases, their math and reading skills/grades rise through learning to use higher-level thinking skills and powers of concentration, their decision-making skills improve, and more. If you know of anyone who knows chess well and would like to come to our weekly meetings at Shaw to help tutor our club, please email Mrs. McDuffie or Mrs. Gosselin, club sponsors, at shsraider3@aol.com
