Guidance

Shaw High School's Guidance Program is developmental, comprehensive, and an integral part of the total program. The guidance and counseling services are designed to help a diversified and multicultural student population set realistic academic, career, and social/personal goals to achieve independence and responsibility in learning. In addition, the guidance and counseling program plays a vital role in assisting the parents, faculty, and other community members to meet the individual needs of all students and to build a positive school environment.

Academics

Counselors monitor and facilitate the student's educational progress to help each achieve his or her potential and become independent learners. To this end, counselors review interim grades and report cards, act as collaborators with the faculty, coordinate parent/teacher conferences, and assist in developing time-management skills with students. Graduation requirements and post-high school plans are also assessed for counselors to continually work with parents, teachers, and the students to develop a four-year educational plan.

Career Goals

Through career and post secondary planning, students assess and identify their individual interests and aptitudes. Decision-making skills are developed as counselors assist students to see the relation ship between personal strengths and interests and occupational, educational, professional and technical options. Individual and classroom guidance sessions are used to review academic plans and post-high school opportunities. In addition, counselors provide information to ease the transition form high school to the world of work or higher education.

Personal/Social Growth

During the high school years, as students assume responsibility in decision making, counselors work directly with students to help develop and to facilitate skills in problem solving and conflict resolution. The counselors assist students in recognizing positive ways to improve relationships with family, friends, and employers, and to respect individual and multicultural differences.

Individual

Students may visit his/her counselor for academic, social, or personal needs. Developing a trusting relationship and promoting a problem solving model are basic to the one-to-one counseling situations. Counselor/student confidentiality is pertinent to this area of counseling.

Classroom

Classroom guidance is utilized to present academic, career, and scholarship information; as well as personal living skills. Topics are based on student interests and needs.

Small Groups

Small groups will be provided to assist students with similar needs or concerns. Group topics may include, but are not limited to: self-esteem, responsibility, study skills, divorce, and Attention-Deficit Disorder.

Parent Involvement

Parents are always welcome to assist Shaw High School with their child's academic and personal needs. Some ways that parents assist in guidance are by attending conferences, open house, join PTSA, and be actively involved with their child's preparation for school.
