| Dear Students, Parents, & Guardians, My name is Nila Burt and I have been teaching for 17 years. I am very excited about being at Shaw this year. My planning period is from 9:35 – 11:05 each morning. Feel free to call the school (569-2567) during that time if you have questions. I will not be available during the evening hours, but I will be happy to call or meet with you early in the morning or during my planning period. I will be assigning daily practice assignments, which may be begun in class and finished (or reviewed!) at home. There will be two quizzes and a test for each chapter. Classwork and homework will be evaluated in a variety of ways, but does not constitute the majority of each student’s grade as it is considered practice. I am always available to students for specific questions about homework problems he or she does not understand before and after school. However, I do expect the student to be paying attention in class before individual instruction is given. I go over every homework problem assigned the following day. Geometry study hall is on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7:15 – 7:35 a.m. and on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons as needed. If your child needs tutoring (e.g., help every week at the same time, not just occasional extra help), the Beta Club offers free tutoring as needed. The math homework hotline number is 464-2757. Your student may call this for any geometry help needed from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Daily assignments are posted in the classroom as well as dates for tests and quizzes, which will be posted at least several days in advance (with the exception of homework quizzes). We will cover approximately 10 chapters. I will give each student a calendar, which covers about three weeks. CALENDARS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE!!!!. It is the student’s responsibility to note changes on their calendars and to notify parents of these changes. Progress Reports will be coming home through the student to the parent on twice per semester. I will be sending home progress reports more often and requesting your signature, so please look for these periodically. I consider it a matter of trust between the parent and student that these are brought home by each young adult. As almost all parents desire their child to be near the front of the room, I try to rotate the students periodically. The room is small and your child should have no problem seeing from any spot in the classroom. I only have one rule: “Each student’s behavior shall be such that learning can be accomplished within the classroom.” We will discuss what this rule entails and how infractions will be disciplined the first few days of class. I do not give detention; rather I give students a report about a mathematician that they must write by hand. Beginning this semester we have an End of Course test in Geometry. It will count for 15% of each student’s grade. This test is given by the State of Georgia and is not optional. The student must retain information from the whole semester. We will be covering material at a very rapid pac I am looking forward to working with you this year. I am in full confidence that we will experience success as long as we work together. Sincerely, Nila J. Burt A 90 –
