 Policies and Procedures

Every student has the right to an education, and our policies and procedures are designed and enforced to protect that right.  All policies are subject to review and change at any time during the school year, and the Principal has the authority to make exceptions based on extenuating circumstances.  Each policy established has a logical reason for its existence.  Please help us work together by treating fellow students and teachers with courtesy and respect.  We expect every student’s cooperation in adhering to these policies.

Attendance

School hours are from 7:45am until 2:45pm. Students should not arrive at school before 7:15am.  Only the Principal or designee may dismiss students, and then only with a parent or guardian’s approval.

Absences

Muscogee County School District attendance policy states that a student whose absences exceed 10 days in one semester will lose credit for block schedule courses.  Loss of credit may be appealed to the Principal.

Excused absences are defined as any absence from school due to illness, death in the immediate family, other health and safety related factors, or a required appearance in court.

The Principal may approve absences due to other circumstances.  A written parental request is to be made to the Principal prior to the event, and in ample time to act on the request.

Long-term absences due to illness or injury may qualify a student for homebound instruction.  Parents should contact the school for information about this service.

Upon returning to school after an absence, students will report to their first period teacher before 7:40am with a written parental excuse containing the date(s) and reason(s) for the absence(s).  The first period teacher will keep the note and issue an excused or unexcused admit.

It is the student’s responsibility to make up all work missed as a result of an excused absence.  The student must make arrangements for make up work within three school days of returning.  Work missed due to unexcused absences or home suspension may not be made up.

In order to participate in an extracurricular activity, students must be in attendance on the day of the event.

School personnel check absences on a regular basis by telephone.  Parents are encouraged to call the school prior to 8:00am to report their child absent.

Tardies

Tardiness is a school and classroom disturbance.  Students reporting to 1st period after the 7:45 bell are considered tardy to school, and must report to the Student Services office to check in before being admitted to class.

Excused tardies are those due to personal or family illness, hazardous conditions, or a family emergency.  All other reasons are unexcused.  Tardies to classes other than 1st period will be handled by the teacher.  Students with more than three unexcused tardies to 1st period will be assigned ISSP or Saturday School.  Unexcused tardies are cumulative through the school year, and students with more than 8 unexcused tardies for the year may not check in (excused or unexcused) without a parent present.  Phone calls may not be a substitute for a parent’s physical presence.  If no parent is present, students may spend the day in ISSP or return home with an unexcused absence.  Students with excessive (more than 12) check ins and check outs (excused or unexcused) may be prohibited from further check ins and check outs unless a parent is present.  Checkouts, regardless of reason, are considered class absences and count toward the 10 day maximum.

Early Dismissals

Appointments requiring early dismissal must have the Principal’s approval.  Students are to present a written request from the parent stating the reason for leaving to the Office of Student Services prior to 7:40am on the day of the request.

Parents, legal guardians, or those specifically designated by parents are the only persons allowed to pick up students, and parents are cautioned against allowing students to check out by phone.

Students who become ill during the school day must go to the office for assistance or to notify parents.  Illness does not permit a student to stay in the restroom during class time without a teacher’s permission.

All students must be signed out through the office before leaving campus.  Students who check out early may not check back in without a doctor’s excuse, and check ins are not allowed after 11am.

Students attempting to check out using others to impersonate parents will be suspended from school for a minimum of one day.

Automobiles

If you drive to school, park your car in the appropriate spot upon arrival and leave the parking lot immediately.  DO NOT blare your car radio while your car is on the campus and DO NOT cruise around or through the parking lot before or after school.

Teacher parking is in the first 4 rows of the front parking lot near the main office entrance and in the rear of the building, and is off limits to student drivers.  Administrative parking is in the rear of the building near the rear entrance to the main office.  Students parking in teacher areas may lose their driving privileges for 2 weeks or longer.

All students who drive to school must register their vehicles with the office.  There is a $5.00 charge for parking privileges.  Disciplinary action, parking citations from SHS Public Safety classes, and a loss of driving privileges will be the consequence for students guilty of violating driving or parking rules.

Students may pick up parking applications before school, during their lunch period, or after school during the first 2 weeks of the school year.  Proof of insurance and a parent’s signature are required to purchase a parking sticker.

Bus Transportation

Free and reliable bus transportation is provided students as long as their behavior is safe and acceptable.  Bus passes are required for all students riding MCSD busses.  Transportation is not provided to students attending Shaw through a hardship assignment.

Students can and will be disciplined by the administration when behavior is unsafe or disruptive.  Disciplinary measures begin with a 1 day suspension from the bus, and can, after unsafe behavior or a 3rd discipline referral from the bus driver, result in a student’s suspension from the bus for the remainder of the school year.

Students must have written permission from a parent or guardian and approval of the administration in order to ride a bus not assigned to the student.

Students transferring busses at Columbus Square Mall are reminded that they are required to ride the bus from the Mall to their designated stop.

Visitors

Learning is a serious business; therefore students are not to bring guests or friends to school Visitors (including parents) are to report immediately to the main office.  Passes will be issued to visitors with official business (i.e. guest speakers, parents, vendors, ex-students, or graduates with official business.)  Parents will not interrupt classes or school functions with unannounced visits to teachers.  Parent conferences with teachers must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. Visitors are NOT welcome in the parking lots, school building, or premises before, during, or after school.  Trespassers and loiterers are subject to criminal prosecution.
